Video Games at the Olympics?
The IOC (International Olympic Committee) will decide later this year if eSports will be a part of the Olympics in Paris 2024.
Obviously, this is great news for all of you competitive gamers who want to rise up a prove yourselves, but what about everyone else? Do you think gaming should have a place at the Olympics?
None of these gamers will be facing the fatigue and pain of running a marathon, or taking the force of a boxing glove to the face from Nicola Adams… That being said, the mental focus and hand eye coordination of these players really is impressive to watch. Being a gamer, I can appreciate a team working together with military precision, or turning mid-air at a 180 degree angle at lightning speed and hitting an enemy in such a way and at such a distance that most would consider impossible.
Gaming at this level is a skill, a talent. It may not require the blood, but definitely the sweat and tears.
Last year the IOC president mentioned that “violent” video games may not be included in the Olympics if video games are approved.
“We want to promote non-discrimination, non-violence, and peace among people” he said. Which is fair and I agree with this, yet it’s looking bleak as the most popular video games on twitch and in eSports do have some level of violence…I just really hope this doesnt rule out Overwatch!
Who knows, maybe a birthday boy or birthday girl that had our gaming van for a party this year will be at Paris 2024 representing Team Great Britain in the first ever Olympic eSports!
